The Process

Project #4: 1995 - 2000

Company Name: Northeast Brine Shrimp
Owned by: Mariculture Technologies International, Inc.

This farm was constructed in Allentown, PA.

The primary production building was 10,000 square feet and completely insulated with 6-inch-thick styrofoam sheets. This facility was the first completely RAS designed and constructed for the commercial production of live brine shrimp (Artemia). The designed allowed for a year-round temperature of 70 degrees F. at an affordable cost.

The goal of this project was to move the high intensity methods previously developed at Florida Brine Shrimp (Project #3) to farm live brine shrimp in order to serve the Northeast market for this product. Local grown product was not burdened by the high air freight and distribution costs endemic to similar products produced in the Florida Keys.

The project ended in the year 2000 due to the financial shock of the 1999 to 2000 stock market crash including 911 and its subsequent impact on market demand for ornamental fish live foods  in the Northeast market area.
